41% of rural families live in poverty in Peru

Argentina has lost market share to Russia in wheat exports to Brazil after a drop in production. According to the Rosário Stock Exchange, Argentina’s average share in Brazilian imports was 80% per season, but Russia, with lower prices, took on 23% of exports, reducing Argentina’s share to 55%. (Rosário Commerce Exchange)

Ministry of Agriculture launched a program called “Less Gaps, More Production”, established in Resolution No. 381/2023. It aims to reduce yield disparities in agricultural crops, through specialized technical assistance. The Government “will make specialized technical advice directly available to small and medium-sized farmers, who in their last three harvests obtained medium to low yields, with the aim of increasing their yield, by using better production practices under sustainable management”. (Ministry of Agriculture)

According to a report from Rosario Stock Exchange, 40% of the 540 thousand hectares that were planned for the early corn season were not sown due to lack of rainfall. (GEA; BCR)

According to projections by the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries, Brazil should export more than 100 million tonnes of soybean this year. The association also made its first projection for the 2024 harvest, and points to a new record of approximately 164.7 million tonnes. This is due to the growth in area, from 44 million hectares in 2023 to 45.1 million in 2024, and due to the increase in average yield, from 3,585 kg/ha to 3,650 kg/ha. (Abiove)

Chinese soybean imports dropped 7.3% compared to 2022, totaling 7.15 million tonnes in September. The decrease was due to high inventories and an increase in global prices. Despite this, Chinese imports from Brazil have increased in 2023, due to the lower prices of Brazilian soybean because of this year’s record harvest. (Receita Federal)

CNH Industrial announced the acquisition of Hemisphere GNSS, a satellite navigation technology company. The total value of the transaction was US$ 175 million. According to the company, the acquisition further consolidates CNH’s presence in the sector of precision technology, automation, and autonomy. (CNH Industrial)

Banco da Amazônia and Coopernorte have signed a partnership to implement the Coopernorte agroindustry, a project to verticalize grain production in the region of Paragominas, State of Paraná. The new agroindustry will have around eight thousand square meters and will process and package products such as corn, beans, and rice. (Coopernorte)

According to the Association of Cattle Ranchers from the State of Mato Grosso, the war in Israel should not hinder beef exports if the conflict does not worsen and start involving neighboring countries. Despite Israel being the 11th largest purchaser of meat from the State of Mato Grosso, daily export averages remain at normal levels. According to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics, almost 6 thousand tonnes of meat in carcass-weight equivalent were sent to the country until September of 2023. (Acrimat; IMEA)

Brazil became the world’s third largest cotton producer in 2023. According to the global director of the Louis Dreyfus Company, Joe Nicosia, Brazilian cotton shows a similar movement to what occurred in the soybean sector, however, he considers that the Brazilian advance also reflects the climate problems in the USA. “Texas will not remain in a state of drought indefinitely, and will at some point return to a robust production. We don’t know when that timing will be”, said Nicosia. Egypt suspends tariffs on imports of chicken meat, which favors the flow of shipments of Brazilian products. Brazil represents 90% of Egyptian imports of chicken meat, and the charging of the MFN tax (valid for all countries), previously of 30%, was zeroed for six months for the whole chicken. “With the suspension of the tax, the expectation is that the Brazilian product will become more competitive, complementing the local offer, which has been impacted by the effects of Avian Influenza and of the increases in production costs”, said Ricardo Santin, president of the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein. (ABPA)

Algeria officially opened its market for halal chicken meat from Brazil after the publication of the International Health Certificate. “We will focus our strategy on complementing local demand for products. Brazil has solid know-how in Halal chicken meat exports and will be able to meet the demands of this market”, said Ricardo Santin, president of the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein. China signed a protocol that opens the market for fresh apricots and peaches from Chile. According to the Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela: “Chile has always been the first to create positive innovations between Asia and the Americas, particularly Latin America and the Caribbean”. Colombian Agricultural Institute confirmed two outbreaks of Classical Swine Fever in the villages of Córdoba and Chaparral, in Sucre, after receiving notifications of the unusual death of pigs. The institute carried out active surveillance in the area and met with Porkcolombia, to determine a vaccination plan in the region, aiming to mitigate the spread of the disease. (ICA)

The Agricultural Sector Financing Fund granted more than 226,426 loans to women in agribusiness, equivalent to US$ 627 thousand, between August 2022 and September 2023. 57% of total loans were allocated to working capital and 34.8% to new investments. (Finagro)

The President of the country, Luis Lacalle Pou, attended an event that marked the beginning of the construction of a new factory of the Virbac laboratory. The company, of French origin, produces viral antigens for veterinary vaccines and in 2022 totaled US$ 20 million in exports. The construction of the new Virbac factory will require an investment of US$ 20 million and will happen between 2023 and 2025. (Government of Uruguay)
