News on the Brazilian Agrochemical Market 

  • Seized in Luís Eduardo Magalhães, State of Bahia, 3,120 L of Paraquat Somax 240 and 145 kg of emamectin benzoate smuggled from Paraguay. Material is prohibited for use in Brazil. (Military police)
  • Syngenta recalls specific batches of Karate 250 and Karate 50 (lambda-cyhalothrin), and Engeo Pleno S (lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam), because of failure identified in production process. (Syngenta)
  • Farmer convicted of irregular application of pesticide in Campo Mourão, State of Paraná. Application was carried out with a tractor mounted sprayer without respecting minimum distances from other farms and urban areas. Penalty of 2 years of imprisonment and 10 days fine in open prison regime will be replaced by provision of services to the community and pecuniary provision. (Court of Justice of Paraná)
  • Anvisa opens for 15 days a public consultation on carbendazim. Short deadline is due to need for compliance with a court order, which determined that the Agency proceed with the toxicological reassessment of the product within 60 days. 27 OECD countries have suspended use of the fungicide due to possible harm to human health.   • Even before precautionary suspension carried out by Anvisa, use of carbendazim had already dropped in the State of Paraná. In 2018, 1,293 tonnes were used, compared to 821 tonnes in 2021, representing 0.71% of pesticides used in the year. Soybean farms received 73.12% of the total amount of carbendazim, followed by wheat, with 15.95%, black and pinto beans, with 8%, and corn, with 2.64%. (Adapar)
  • President of Russia says the country shall guarantee uninterrupted supply of fertilizers to Brazil. Commitment was reinforced during telephone conversation between the presidents of the two countries. (Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos França)
  • Ihara enters the pasture sector, launching 6 products at once, those being herbicides, insecticides, an adjuvant and a product for seed treatment. (Ihara)
  • Indemnity of approximately US$ 90 million paid in 2013 by Shell and Basf for soil contamination caused by pesticides is finally used to build a hospital in Campinas, State of São Paulo. (Unicamp)
  • Ourofino Agrociência’s profit grew 54.6% between April 2021 and March 2022, compared to previous year results. Adjusted net income is approximately US$ 27.7 million. Revenue increased 20%, reaching almost US$ 364 million. (Ourofino Agrociência)
  • Banana and tobacco farms are those that apply less pesticides in Brazil. In the last 20 years, tobacco farming reduced use of pesticides by 83.3%, reaching only 1.1 kg/ha, while banana farms use less than 1 kg/ha. (Sindag; IBGE)
  • Agronomical Institute of Campinas participates with National Union of Rural Learning and CropLife Brasil in pesticide application training for instructors. Through this partnership, which started in 2021, two training courses were carried out, for approximately 150 instructors. It seeks to address changes in legislation on the use of pesticides provided for in Regulatory Norm No. 31 and Decree 10833/21. Objective is for trained instructors to transfer knowledge to farmers to reinforce safety standards and improve efficiency of product use. (IAC-APTA; Senar; Croplife Brasil)
  • Ministry of Agriculture carries out inspection action on fertilizers and inoculants in the State of Paraná. Approximately 124 thousand L of products, 8 thousand tonnes of organomineral fertilizers, remnants of fertilizers, unidentified raw materials, and 60 thousand labels and advertising panflets with irregularities were seized. Over 50 establishments located in the Londrina and Maringá region were inspected, and 43 product samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Seven companies were provisionally embargoed. (Mapa)
  • Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), a Moroccan state-owned phosphate manufacturer, shall build a phosphate fertilizer factory in Brazil. OCP holds 31% phosphate products market share in the world, and approximately 70% of the world’s phosphate rock reserves, in addition to being the largest supplier of phosphorus to Brazil. (OCP)
  • In compliance with court decision, Anvisa approves toxicological evaluation of pesticides glufosinate ammonium salt (Syncrom), pyriproxyfen (Tecnomyl), and fluroxypyr-meptyl + triclopyr-butyl (Cropchem). (Anvisa)
  • Fertlizer average price decrease in May. Fertilizer Purchasing Power Index closed at 1.75; representing a reduction of 7% compared to April. (Mosaic)
  • President of the Committee on Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Senator Acir Gurgacz, announces a reanalysis of his decision on Pesticide Bill 1459/2022, that changes pesticide legislation. New report shall be elaborated. (CRA)
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) can reduce insecticide application by 50%. Experiments using IPM in soybean farms, developed by Embrapa and the Paraná Rural Development Institute since 2013/14, used an average of 1.9 application of insecticide, while average in Paraná State is 3.9 applications.
