Federal agricultural inspectors are conducting inspections on wooden packaging coming from abroad to prevent the entry of pests into Brazil, in accordance with the international standards of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). “Wooden packaging and supports are capable of harboring pests that are absent in the country and, once introduced, can cause serious damage to national agriculture by infesting native and commercial forests”, explained Oscar Rosa, agronomic engineer and retired agricultural inspector. Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Bayer to return more than US$ 2 billion to farmers for royalties paid since 2018 to two patents for a genetically modified organism known as Intacta RR2 PRO. “Thus, the multinational must reimburse the royalties paid since 2018 by producers for the use of the technology, in addition to guaranteeing the right of farmers to request abstention from the collection of royalties from the technology as of the expiration of the term of validity of the patents listed in the lawsuit,” the statement indicates. The Supreme Court of Entre Ríos has extended the prohibition zone for rural fumigation with pesticides in the city of Colonia Ensayo, Argentina. The Superior Court of Justice of Entre Ríos declared the unconstitutionality of two rules of the Undersecretary of Agrarian Affairs and Natural Resources that establish a safety distance of between 50 and 100 meters for the use of pesticides in areas near homes and waterways. “Technological and scientific advances have shown the unreasonableness of these rules, that is, their manifest ineffectiveness in fulfilling the purpose for which they were issued, that is, to prevent the application of pesticides by aerial or ground spraying from causing damage to third parties…”, said Deputy Laura Mariana Soage. In research, the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Cedenna) has developed green nanoparticles from Chilean endemic plants for use in medicine and agriculture, as a more effective and sustainable alternative to conventional methods, reducing chemical dependence and operating costs for farmers. “We are working on the development of nanopesticides that are products capable of controlling phytopathogens that are highly desired because they are a highly innocuous product, we could say, they do not affect the environment”, points out Gustavo Zúñiga, researcher at Cedenna. Researchers from the “Agricultural Biotechnology in the Face of Climate Change” group at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico, are developing biopesticides and bioinputs, with mathematical modeling techniques to describe the interaction of these biological insecticides with soil, pests, and crops. It seeks to design strategies to minimize the harmful effects of climate change on agriculture. “… the model allows us to design control strategies, through which this reality can be transformed, taking it from an undesirable state to a desirable one, with a minimum expenditure of resources and in an optimal way according to certain criteria that are established a priori”, said Andrés Fraguela Collar, coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling.
