 Temporal Framework for delimitation of indigenous lands was considered urgent

Country is negotiating to expand its foreign exchange swap line agreement with China. Currently, Argentina has access to approximately US$ 5 billion through the agreement with China, but the Argentine government wants to discuss the possibility of increasing the amount and sign a new agreement by the beginning of June. (BCRA)

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, the Rural Environmental Registry system is “extremely flawed”. Fávaro said that, when the system was created, it was intended only to collect information. Therefore, it was self-declaratory and “without any responsibility for those who had declared”. Only 0.72% of the declarations have been validated since the creation of the system. Country is expected to increase its share of sugar exports, reaching 48% of total global transactions during 2023/24, an increase of 4% compared to the previous cycle. By 2026/27, the country should reach 53% of total transactions. According to Raízen, Brazil has the lowest production cost when compared to other countries. “Brazil is the most efficient in sugar production… investments need to happen, the new price balance should be maintained until we have a new installed capacity”, said Raízen’s trading vice-president, Paulo Neves. (Raízen)

Eight cases of avian influenza were confirmed in wild birds, causing great concern in the poultry industry. “Brazil was the only major producer where [the flu] had not arrived. House of Congress considers that Bill No. 490/2007 should be dealt with urgently. Bill establishes the Temporal Framework for delimitation of indigenous lands. The author of the project, Congressman Arthur Maia, argues that the Framework is necessary to prove the presence of indigenous groups on the land and does not interfere with rights already acquired. The Framework determines that indigenous people should only have the right to land if they were already established in the area on the date of enactment of the Federal Constitution of 1988. In the State of Mato Grosso, cattle confinement should decrease by 31.88% in 2023, when compared to 2022. 479.77 thousand animals should be confined this year, compared to 704.263 thousand in the previous year. Price of live cattle continues to be the main concern among ranchers. In April 2022, farmers received an average of US$ 59 per arroba (Brazilian unit equal to 15 kg). In April 2023, the value dropped to US$ 49.73. (IMEA)



Chile and Brazil signed an agreement to increase meat imports. A “pre-listing” system was adopted to qualify establishments that export beef, pork, lamb and poultry. This reduces bureaucracy and facilitates access to the Chilean market. Now the Brazilian government can identify the facilities that comply with Chilean requirements, eliminating needs for authorization and individual inspection of companies by Chilean authorities. (Ministry of Agriculture)

Suspended seed potato (Solanum tuberosum) exports to Brazil. Brazilian government will carry out a reassessment regarding the risks of agricultural pests on the crop. Chile is the second largest supplier to Brazil. In 2022, Chile exported 1.2 thousand tonnes, reaching US$ 1.1 million. Coffee production should reach 11.6 million bags of 60 kg in the 2023/24 harvest, an increase of 300 thousand bags compared to 2022/23. According to the USDA, “improved climatic conditions for coffee farming are likely to slightly increase production”. Environmental program of the new president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, proposes the strengthening of protected wild areas in the country, both public and private. National Service of Health and Agro-Food Quality sacrificed approximately 13,000 laying hens from a farm where avian flu was detected, in the city of Racedo, province of Entre Ríos. This is the first case detected in the region.
