Avian Influenza Strikes Latin American Countries

According to a report from HedgePoint Global Markets, the Argentine agricultural season is going through a period of crisis. “…one of the consequences of the harvest delay is that there may still be time to avoid greater losses. By this we do not mean the harvest will be good. That is already past. However, the recent rains have helped and the NDVI improved in the southern departments”, say the company’s analysts. Mexico authorized the entry of boneless and matured beef from 22 slaughterhouses in Argentina. From January to November, Argentina exported 825,386 tonnes of beef, of which 76.5% were destined for the Chinese market. (Government of Argentina)

Confirmed avian influenza in a farm in the city of Sacaba, in Cochabamba Department. National Service of Agricultural Health and Food Safety declared a health emergency, establishing containment measures focused on controlling and eradicating the disease. (Senasag)

Fast increase of reports of Asian rust in soybean farming states and cities. 119 reports of the disease were recorded in the 2022/23 season. Soybean Asian rust is present in nine Brazilian states, with 79% of occurrences in commercial crops during the grain filling phase. Agriculture and Livestock Federation of the State of São Paulo – Faesp requested support from the government to contain avian influenza in the State of São Paulo. “The recent outbreaks of the disease reported in South America are causing concern in the productive sector. After all, it is an exotic disease in Brazil, a disease of high pathogenicity and that, in the event of an outbreak, can cause significant damage to agriculture in the State of São Paulo and in the entire country”, advised Fábio de Salles Meirelles, president of Faesp. Cooperativa Central Gaúcha released a joint work of 21 cooperatives from the State of Rio Grande do Sul that reports on the weighted average of losses because of the drought in the State. Rainfed corn, the most affected crop, accounts for losses of 53%. In soybean, losses reached 16%. (CCGL)

Confirmed the presence of three highly pathogenic avian influenza cases in wild birds in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, province of Limón. Birds were transferred to the quarantine area. (Senasa)

Brazilian Embassy in Mexico City and the Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development – Sader signed a work strategy agreement to strengthen and streamline agri-food trade between the two countries. Sader indicated that the objective is to progressively strengthen the presence of Mexican products in South America, with emphasis on avocado, lemon and asparagus. (Sader)

Fungus Cladosporium sp. harmed tangerine exports to the USA in 2022.  The parasite damages the tangerine peel because of the appearance of brown spots. Retracted demand and a greater volume of tangerines on the market caused the amount of fruit stored to increase, intensifying the appearance of the fungus and leading to the disposal of large amounts of tangerines.
