Agriculture Commission held the third public hearing on the bill that suggests new rules for the use of pesticides in the country, PL 1459/2022. Anvisa’s Monitoring and Risk Assessment Manager, Adriana Torres de Sousa Pottier, questioned the interference in Anvisa’s autonomy with regard to the responsibilities it has in releasing pesticides. The first controversial point, according to Pottier, would be Anvisa’s exclusion from the reanalysis or reassessment process of already registered pesticides. “The technological innovations that exist today no longer fit into the current legislation. FGV’s Center for Agribusiness Studies estimates growth of 2.2% for the agricultural sector in 2022. In September, the Brazilian agroindustry increased 1.3% in its physical production compared to 2021. Non-Food Products Segment recorded expansion of 2. 6%. Within the category, agricultural inputs were responsible for the growth of 22.8%. Category of pesticides and disinfectants grew by 57.7%. (FGV Agro)
Koppert launches an equity investment fund for agtechs that aim to develop solutions to agricultural bioproducts. The fund will have an initial offer of US$ 9.33 million, consisting of equity shares in biological input startups. (Koppert)
Investments in proper management of fertilization in pastures can increase gains by 35% for ranchers, according to the Pasto Forte program, of Fundação MT, that carried out research on three farms in the State of Mato Grosso. Kynetec will expand information data base about crop nutrition. In the 2022/23 season, in addition to soybean, the company will research the behavior of farmers related to cotton, coffee, sugarcane and off-season corn. Research should involve seed treatment, correction, base fertilization, foliar fertilizers and biostimulants. Results should be published after June 2023. Complete survey will cover reference prices of and field practices adopted by farmers during the crop nutrition process, with information on the supply chain, market representation by segment, farmer adherence to products and brands, most used technologies and main companies. Boa Vista do Cadeado, State of Rio Grande do Sul, started lecture about the correct and safe application of pesticide based on NR 31, that should take place between December 12th and 14th, in partnership with the National Rural Learning Service. The Center of Excellence in Fruit Growing in Juazeiro, State of Bahia, will also host the Correct and Safe Use of Agricultural Defensives Workshop, on November 23rd, where 120 participants are expected. In the State of Acre, collection of pesticide packaging has low adherence by farmers, with a drop of 51%. In 2021, more than 40,000 packages were collected, while in 2022, until the month of November, around 19,000 were collected, even though collection is mandatory by law. Research carried out by Embrapa Soja (Embrapa Soybean) over the last 10 years has shown that the inoculation of corn seeds with the bacteria Azospirillum brasilense (strains Ab-V5 and Ab-V6) allows a reduction of 25% in the nitrogen topdressing fertilization, considering a dose of 90 kg /hectare of N-fertilizer. According to the researcher Mariangela Hungary, the inoculation of corn with Azospirillum brasilense leads to a reduction in the topdressing nitrogen fertilization and allows an average increase of 3.1% in grain yield. Yara begins a partnership with Cooxupé to supply green fertilizer. Over the next 18 months, both companies will study the feasibility of supplying the input. “This partnership with Cooxupé is Yara’s first step towards the introduction of a green fertilizer in Brazilian agriculture”, says Marcelo Altieri, president of Yara Brasil. Green fertilizer is produced with 80% to 100% less carbon emissions compared to conventional fertilizer. (Yara Brasil)

Task force of the Secretariat for Agricultural Defense from the Ministry of Agriculture was carried out in the region of Camaçari and Candeias, State of Bahia, to inspect companies that manufacture mineral fertilizers. The region is one of the main production centers of nitrogen fertilizers in Brazil. Three companies were embargoed to adapt their facilities and quality control procedures. During the operation, 15 fertilizer producing establishments, two importers and two storage service providers were inspected. 11 infraction notices and 10 subpoena terms were issued. Environmental Police seizes 60 tonnes of fertilizers stolen in the rural area of Guarantã, State of São Paulo. According to the police, the 56 tonnes of fertilizers totaled an average of US$ 39.14 thousand in damages. (Environmental Police of Guarantã)
Fertilizer prices in October 2022 showed an average increase of 123% in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, compared to the same period in 2020. The greatest increase was observed in potassium chloride (KCl), 192%; followed by the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium formula (NPK 4-30-10), 105% and monoammonium phosphate (MAP), 73%. Compared to October 2021, there was no average increase in prices. Increase in KCl cost equaled decrease in MAP and NPK. (Aprosoja – MS)
Integrated action with Federal Police and the Border Battalion of the Military Police of the State of Paraná seizes more than 900 kg of smuggled pesticides from Paraguay. Embrapa Arroz e Feijão (Embrapa Rice and Beans) inaugurates bioinput production laboratory in Santo Antônio de Goiás, State of Goiás. The Multiuser Laboratory for Research and Development of Bioinputs – BioFabLab aims at the joint development of biotechnological solutions with Embrapa’s public and private partners. Project was conceived in partnership with Solubio. The laboratory structure will be prepared for scaling of the production process and development of biological inputs, being able to produce from small volumes (100 ml) in shaken flasks, to larger volumes (5 L), in a benchtop bioreactor, or on a large scale (220 L ), in its biofactory.
