Pesticide Import Grew 95% at the Paranaguá Container Terminal

  • UFSCar creates a method to identify the banned pesticide pentachlorophenol (PCP) in water bodies. The product is smuggled to be used in treatment for wood and in tobacco. “Pentachlorophenol is considered one of the main pollutants in the world. It is very toxic, carcinogenic and there has been cases of seizure in the last decade”, explains researcher Marília Reginato de Barros. (Federal University of São Carlos)
  • Municipal Department of Agriculture and Livestock presents fertilizer and soil conditioner based on humic acid for small farmers at an Emater event in Ji-Paraná, State of Roraima. Fertilizers will be donated to farmers, with the aim of encouraging the development of family farming in the region. (Semagri)
  • Farmers reduced fertilizer use in corn crops because of high prices. Costs of fertilizers rose 64% for medium-size farmers and 105% for small-size ones compared to previous season. Expenses on pesticides increased 186% for medium-size famers and 485% for small-size farmers. In the case of cotton, prices increased 135% compared to last season. Data refers to the states of Pernambuco, Sergipe, Goiás, Tocantins, Pará, Mato Grosso, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso do Sul and Roraima. (National Confederation of Agriculture)
  • Inputs for fertilizer manufacturing are exempted of the value-added tax in the State of São Paulo because of the approval of the Court of Justice of São Paulo. Judges determined that benefit is not valid only for fertilizers used in food production, contrary to São Paulo Treasury Department position. (TJSP)

  • Farmers make less frequent complaints in regards to damages caused by 2.4-D in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, according to Valter Potter, president of the Association of Fine Wine Producers of the Campanha Gaúcha. According to Potter, the reduction of 32% in the number of complains of drift in the 2021/2022 season does not indicate improvement. “The fact is that the regulations created by the Secretary of Agriculture only work on paper. Discouraged, many farmers stopped reporting, but the percentage of occurrences was higher than in previous years, reaching 88%. In the regions of Don Pedrito, Bagé, Livramento and Jaguari, there was never as much drift as in the last harvest”, says Potter. (Association of Fine Wine Producers of the Campaign)
  • MF Rural, an agribusiness marketplace platform, handled approximately US$ 8.34 billion between January and August 2022, an increase of almost 74% compared to the previous year. (Rural MF)

  • MAPA seized 488 tonnes of fertilizers in Curitiba, State of Paraná. Products are suspected to be counterfeit. The company that was handling, packing and selling the products was not registered with the Ministry or the Agricultural Defense Agency of Paraná. Total of 34 tonnes of urea in bulk and 21 tonnes in 50 kg bags were seized, together with 20 tonnes of bulk monoammonium phosphate and 399 tonnes of fertilizers in big bags, each containing one tonne.   • Staphyt expands their operations through the acquisition of Grupo Phytus, a consulting and services company in the area of product research and development.   • Pesticide import grew by 95% at the Paranaguá Container Terminal between January and August 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling more than 166 thousand tonnes. (TCP)
