Pork Exports Totaled US$ 20.1 Million, an Increase of 98% in Paraguay
Soybean planted area is expected to reach 17.7 million ha in the 2024/25 harvest season, 7.5% more than the previous season. Due to the dry weather and the leafhopper, corn planted area is expected to fall by 21%, as farmers will need to plant earlier to avoid the spiroplasma bacteria transmitted by this insect. In a provisional measure, US$ 94.74 million were released to combat forest fires in the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal. Approximately US$ 28.52 million will be allocated to operations in the Legal Amazon and US$ 23.96 million to civil defense and protection actions, and to risk and disaster management. In addition, US$ 21.07 million will be transferred to the Ministry of the Environment for actions to protect and restore biodiversity and combat deforestation and fires. (Federal Government)
Grain production in the 2023/24 season is expected to totalise 298.41 million tonnes, a reduction of 21.4 million tonnes compared to the previous harvest. This is due to irregular rainfall at the beginning of the season and low precipitation during the cycle. Soybean production is estimated at 147.38 million tonnes, 7.23 million tonnes less than the previous harvest. In the case of corn, the total harvest forecast is 115.72 million tonnes, a reduction of 12.3%. Has been suspended the Law No. 12430/2024 of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, which imposes sanctions for the illegal occupation of rural and urban private properties. The decision was made in a direct action of unconstitutionality, under the argument that the law invades the exclusive powers of the Union. The law establishes sanctions for individuals involved in invasions of private properties, such as prohibiting the receipt of state aid or social benefits and prohibiting the taking of office in public positions of trust. ApexBrasil and Sebrae signed a partnership to boost agricultural exports. The total resources are approximately US$ 32.2 million and the goal is to encourage cooperatives and micro and small businesses to improve export-oriented strategies. For agribusiness, investments totalize US$ 13.8 million, with an expected increase of more than US$ 34.05 billion between 2024 and 2025. Seven agreements will be signed to expand the presence in international markets of the sectors of processed rice, beef, machinery, inputs, etc. “The volume of global foreign trade grew 0.8%, while Brazil grew 8.2%, that is, we grew 10 times more than the world average”, said Geraldo Alckmin, the country’s vice president. The Attorney General’s Office and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation have filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for climate damages resulting from violations registered in 7,075 ha of a federal conservation unit in the Jamanxim National Forest, State of Pará. The costs of compensation were estimated at US$ 117.05 million and were calculated based on the social cost of greenhouse gas emissions, estimated at 1,139,075 tonnes of carbon. The damages were caused by deforestation, burning, application of herbicides, introduction of exotic species, destruction of Permanent Preservation Areas, etc. (AGU)
Agribusiness exports totaled US$ 14.14 billion in August. Highlights include the soybean complex, with a 31.6% share, meats (15.3%), sugar and alcohol complex (13.5%), cereals, flours and preparations (9.1%) and forestry products (9%). The sum of foreign sales by these sectors corresponded to 78.6% of the value exported by agribusiness (US$ 11.11 billion). (MAPA)
The destroyed area by fires in sugarcane fields in the State of São Paulo since the end of August is larger than the territory of the city of São Paulo, at around 181 thousand ha. The estimated loss is R$ 1.2 billion, calculated including the effects on standing sugarcane, ratoons and the poor quality of the raw material, in addition to management and replanting costs. Colombia has registered a record in the adoption of GMOs, reaching 154,677 ha in 2023. The main crop was maize (+20%), which represents 36% of the total planted area in the country. In addition, GMO corn contributed more than 50% of total production, which reached 1.6 million tonnes. (ICA; Fenalce)
96.6% of the country’s agricultural production of perennial crops in 2023 was sugarcane, banana, oil palm and coffee. Sugarcane and banana had the highest production, with 3.19 million tonnes and 2.44 million tonnes, respectively. A public notice for a contest has been released for the implementation of agroforestry system models as part of the Poverty, Reforestation, Energy and Climate Change Project (Proeza). In August, meat exports to Chile fell by 2.6% in value and 2% in volume. However, the country is still the main destination for Paraguayan meat exports, with 40.9% of the total value exported and a volume of 86.8 thousand tonnes this month. (BCP)

A state of emergency has been declared in regions affected by forest fires. More than 3,300 ha of cultivated and natural areas have been affected in 20 regions of the country. Around 1,800 people have been affected and 16 have died, in addition to the death of 334 livestock animals. However, 95% of the fires in natural areas have been controlled and extinguished. Ten technologically advanced irrigation projects will be implemented to benefit more than 3,500 farmers in eight regions of the country. The investment is approximately US$ 9.26 million to carry out works in Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, etc. “The objective is not only to guarantee access to water in regions with water scarcity, but also to increase the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, improving the yield of crops such as quinoa, oregano, artichoke, avocado, grapes and forage products such as oats, alfalfa and improved pastures”, said Orlando Chirinos, executive director of the Subsectoral Irrigation Program (PSI).
