Colombia Has Temporarily Suspended the Import of Poultry Products From Brazil

Agribusiness accounts for 23% of private sector employment in the country, with 4.1 million positions. The beef sector is the one that generates the most jobs, corresponding to 12.3%, followed by the fruit, vegetable and legume sector (10.4%), wheat (10%) and soybean (9.1%). (FADA)

A study indicates that irrigation increases crop yields by 115%, 51% and 28% for wheat, corn and soybeans, respectively. The research has been conducted for 28 years in the Córdoba region, and highlights the importance of irrigation due to the high variability in rainfall patterns beyond the window from October to March, which accounts for 80% of rainfall. Aquiles Salinas, director of the INTA Córdoba Regional Center, highlighted the importance of monitoring soil water content as “a fundamental strategy that allows us to irrigate sustainably, providing only what the crop needs and what is not supplied by rainfall”. Deforestation in the Legal Amazon in the State of Mato Grosso has reduced by 51% in one year. According to the historical average, the reduction over the last 8 years was 40%, with an average deforestation of 1,420 km²/year. Monitoring is carried out via satellite and it is possible to detect the action in real time. “We plan the operations. Deforestation that has already occurred is remotely reported, where it receives the fine and the embargo remotely”, said Alex Marega, executive secretary of the State Secretariat for the Environment. From January to July of 2024, exports of processed and fresh beef increased by 35%, with 1,731,944 tonnes, compared to the same period of the previous year, with 1,281,943 tonnes. Only in July, exports grew by 42%, reaching 291,1 thousand tonnes. (Abrafrigo; Secex; MDIC)

In 2Q/2024, BRF reported a profit of US$ 200.2 million. “The continuous evolution of commercial execution, combined with an innovation strategy focused on profitability and investments in our brands, allowed BRF to provide strong volume growth in all categories in which it operates in Brazil, with emphasis on processed foods. In the International segment, we achieved Ebitda of US$ 274.5 million, with an expressive margin of 21%”, said the company. (BRF)

Fundo Amazônia (Amazon Fund) has received US$ 47 million donation from the US. Around 114 projects are supported by the Fund, with an investment of around US$ 457,5 million. (BNDES)

On an emergency basis, financial institutions are authorized to extend debts of farmers in the State of Rio Grande do Sul until September 16th. The measure allows the suspension of installments and interest on rural credit from May 1st to September  15th . (CMN; MAPA)



The country will export melons to Brazil, after phytosanitary measures have been established, through Pest Risk Analysis. “Brazil is a major consumer and producer of melons, especially in the Northeast regions, such as in the States of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, which produce popular varieties such as yellow melon, Cantalupo  and Galia. Chilean melons, recognized for their high quality and excellent flavor, find a receptive market in Brazil, which represents a great opportunity for Chilean farmers”, said José Guajardo Reyes, national director of the Agricultural and Livestock Service.
