Fertilizer and Pesticide News in Brazil
- Anvisa approves toxicological evaluation of Ihara’s pesticide (metominostrobin + impyrfluxam + chlorothalonil), in compliance with the court decision. (Anvisa)
- Biochar-based organomineral fertilizers can reduce dependence on imported fertilizers. For nitrogen and potassium, the release of nutrients can be more gradual than when using conventional sources, preventing losses from leaching. (Embrapa Meio Ambiente)
- Seized 2,000 kg of fertilizers sold irregularly in the city of São José do Rio Preto, State of São Paulo. Products were packed into smaller packages and sold through the internet. (Ministry of Agriculture)

- Federal University of Minas Gerais develops a non-toxic and of low environmental impact fungicide made from niobium nanoparticles. Efficacy has been proved in tests in vitro, in vivo and in the field. For coffee rust, a disease caused by the fungus Hemileia vastatrix, results were better than those obtained with conventional products. (UFMG)
- Seizures of illegal pesticides in the city of Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, increased sixfold in just one year. In April, the entry of 10 tonnes from Argentina marked the largest seizure of the product ever made in the state. (Federal Highway Police)
- Prices of fertilizers for soybeans in the State of Mato Grosso increase 110%, increasing production costs by 48% compared to April 2021. (State of Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics)
- Identified dry-beans with pesticide residues that are prohibited or with levels above the allowed limit, with glyphosate being the most common product. In a survey carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, 89% of cowpea and 32% common bean samples had irregularities in 2019. In 2020, values were 77% and 37%, respectively. Results for 2021 are still being evaluated. According to Anvisa, irregularities found do not present an acute risk in the case of consumption of these foods. (Anvisa; Mapa)
- Imports of fertilizers from Russia drops by 9%. Canada, China, Nigeria and Israel increase supply to Brazil. In April, 3.25 million tonnes of fertilizers were imported, 71% higher than in the same period of the previous year. (Secretariat of Foreign Trade)
- Seizure 1,220 L of paraquat in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. According to Rafael Friederich de Lima, head of the Agricultural Inputs and Services Division of the State Department of Agriculture: “The entry of this pesticide in Brazil occurs illegally, usually brought from Argentina and Uruguay, which has required great effort from police and inspection agencies.
