 Mexico expects to harvest 900 thousand tonnes of berries  in 2024

Rainfall and moderate temperatures have favored the 2023/24 soybean and corn crops, despite many areas being affected by strong storms in December. Agricultural sector is expected to contribute three times more to the economy in 2024. Gross value of grain production should exceed US$ 15 billion, compared to US$ 5.3 billion recorded in 2023. Main reason for the increase is the recovery of the harvest, after the large decrease that happened in 2022/23. Argentina and the International Monetary Fund reached an agreement on the seventh review of the US$ 44 billion loan program, with the possibility of an additional disbursement of US$ 4.7 billion. The objective of the new agreement would be to “support the strong political efforts of the new authorities to restore macroeconomic stability and help Argentina meet its balance of payments needs”, according to a note from the IMF. According to Economy Minister Luis Caputo, now “it’s time for the country to solve its financial problems by solving the structural problems… which involve an addiction to excessive public spending”. Dry weather has lowered the expectations for the 2024/25 sugarcane harvest. Despite the record in the current harvest, lower soil humidity in most of the Central-South region is harming sugarcane development. Record of 5.138 million tonnes for chicken meat exports in 2023, an increase of 6.6% compared to 2022, indicating a positive trend for 2024. “Despite the challenges of this year, including a scenario with high variations in markets and production costs, the result is highly positive… at the same time, it indicates the export trend that we should observe throughout 2024”, according to the president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association, Ricardo Santin. (ABPA)

Chile and South Korea have established an Electronic Phytosanitary Certification, aiming to facilitate trade and improve phytosanitary control. “Chile became the first South American country to have an electronic phytosanitary certification approved with South Korea”, according to Miguel Canala-Echeverría, manager of Frutas de Chile. “This is great news for our fresh fruit exports… and it means less time and resources wasted for the public and private sector”. (Asoex)

New insurance against avian influenza, available for farmers with up to 20 thousand birds. “This insurance is complemented by the measures that farmers are taking to prevent bird flu. “If it doesn’t rain well within the next ten days, we should see irreversible losses”, said the vice-president of the Association of Soybean, Oilseed and Cereal Producers of Paraguay, Karsten Friedrichsen. Soybeans in the grain filling phase, in a later cycle, are developing well, with prospects for average productivity between 3.5 and 4 tonnes/ha. However, the reduction in rainfall in December and the occurrence of only irregular and low-volume rainfall is a cause for concern. This soybean stage requires at least 30 mm of rain per week to achieve ideal development. (APS)

There was a 40% increase in the income of more than 163 thousand small and medium-sized farmers during 2023, a result of actions of the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation, which produced and supplied 1.2 thousand tonnes of seeds, 450 thousand seedlings, 65.9 thousand tubes of semen and 829 high-quality cattle embryos, in addition to providing soil quality analysis to farmers.
