According to the researcher at Desafios Agro, Germison Tomquelski, the expectation for the off-season corn is a reduction in the occurrence of corn leafhoppers (Dalbulus maidis). “In addition to a natural contribution of the climate – that in this season was more favorable to crop management and to corn plants than to the leafhopper – farmers invested in initial care and in more diversified and complementary integrated management, with strategies such as the removal of unwanted spontaneous corn plants”, said Tomquelski. Milk ranchers from the State of Rio Grande do Sul held protests at the border with Argentina. According to them, the imports of dairy products from Mercosur are harming local production. In the 1H of 2023, Brazil imported 116 thousand tonnes of milk and dairy products, an increase of 240% compared to the same period of 2022. The protest was organized by the Federation of Agricultural Workers and had more than 1.4 thousand ranchers. (Fetag-RS)



Chile is facing a “megadrought” for over 10 years. According to Felipe Garrido, a member of the water resources committee of the Infrastructure Policy Council, building reservoirs in the country can take up to 50 years. “We are talking about projects that require a very high investment and are politically controversial. Chilean prune exports increased 35% in the 1H of 2023. The increase is even higher when considering FOB value of shipments, that reached US$ 104.4 million, 40% more than in the same period in 2022. Universities of Bologna, in Italy, and Uniminuto, in Bogotá, signed a cooperation agreement on sustainable agriculture, to facilitate the training and migration of professors between the countries. “The objective is to improve knowledge on organic and sustainable agriculture, agroecology, certification, and designation of origin”, according to the coordinator of the Rural Development Program with Territorial Approach, Furio Massolino.
