Camil Will Operate in Paraguay’s Rice Market

Chicken meat exports have increased by 8.8%, reaching US$ 243 million. The country has 63 active markets, which main destinations are Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Singapore. (CEPA)

Forest fires burned more than 10 million hectares in 2024, mainly in the Eastern region. This is the worst fire season in the country’s history. Estimative of the 2024/25 grain harvest is to grow by 8.3%, reaching 322.47 million tonnes. If the harvest reaches this value, it will be the largest volume in the historical series, with an increase of 24.62 million tonnes. The cultivated area is also expected to grow to 81.34 million hectares (+1.9%). State of Bahia is the national leader in cocoa production. In addition, in 2023 the State’s grain harvest reached a historic record, with growth of 12.2% compared to the previous year. Fruit production also increased (+16.4%), reaching US$ 1 billion. (Seagri; IBGE)

Federal Police has carried out operations in the States of Pará, Mato Grosso and Goiás with the aim of dismantling a criminal organization responsible for rural credit fraud, corruption of public employees, and environmental crimes. Federal Government has submitted a Bill to increase penalties for environmental crimes. The proposal increases the sentence for crimes such as setting fire to vegetation from 4 to 6 years, and establishes that prison must initially be served in a closed system. Currently, sentences range from 2 to 3 years. The State of Paraná seeks to increase irrigated area by 20%, from 170 thousand hectares to 205 thousand hectares, or 3% of the currently planted area, informed the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply. To reach this objective, the Irriga Paraná program is expected to invest US$ 35.31 million. Requests for bankruptcy protection in agriculture reached the highest level in almost 20 years. Among the 10 largest companies, debts total more than US$ 2.11 billion, an increase of 150% compared to May of this year, when it reached R$5 billion. Highlights include the companies Agrogalaxy (R$4.67 billion), Grupo Patense (R$2.15 billion) and Sperafico Agroindustrial (R$1.02 billion). (Diamantino Advogados Associados)

The share of agriculture in the 2024 GDP is estimated in 21.8%, a drop of 2.2%. This is due to lower prices, a drop in the production of soybeans, corn and sugarcane, and the fact that agricultural economic activity fell by 1.28% in the 2Q of 2024. Agriculture GDP sector fell by 1.22% in this period and accumulated a decline of 5.1% in 2024. Camil will operate in the country’s rice market with a strategy of leasing and subleasing land with the aim of guaranteeing rice supplies and supporting small farmers. “In this movement of leasing and subleasing, copying the Uruguayan model, we will guarantee the origination of rice for Camil Paraguay”, said the company’s CEO, Luciano Quartiero. (Camil)

The total number of registered farmers has reached 2.04 million, of which 931,52 thousand are women. 64.5% of men own at least one of the plots of land on the agricultural unit, compared to 35.5% of women, which restricts access to financial credit and greater opportunities. “Women are a key player in the farms development, but we still have large gaps that we must overcome to achieve a more egalitarian reality”, said Giovanna Vásquez, director of the Directorate for the Promotion of Women Agricultural Producers (DPMPA) at Midagri.
