Fallow Period Campaign for Beans Has Begun in the Federal District

In 2Q/2024, Nutrien reported a 12.9% drop in its profit, to US$ 220 million. The balance sheet now is US$ 392 million. This is due to foreign exchange contracts that were carried out with Brazilian institutions by a person not authorized to carry out this operation. (Nutrien)

Fertilizer Purchasing Power Index reached its worst level since October/2022, being 1.11% in July/2024. This is due to the increase in the price of fertilizers (+3%) and the drop in the price of commodities, being -4.6% for corn and -2.15% for soybeans. However, the company stated that “despite delays in fertilizer purchases, the outlook remains positive for the second corn and cotton season, with expectations of recovery in the coming months to avoid logistical backlogs at the end of the year.” (Mosaic Fertilizantes)

New phytosanitary proceedings were introduced to control and prevent pests in soybeans, with focus on the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, which causes Asian rust. Normative Instruction No. 06/2024 extended the sowing calendar for the 2024/25 season and changed the concept of the sowing calendar, consisting of the start date from the moment seedlings are allowed to emerge in the field and the end date as the last day on which sowing is allowed. A person was arrested transporting 100 packages of smuggled pesticides from Paraguay in Cianorte, State of Paraná. The seized products were 1 kg bags of THX Tampa 75, and were sent to the Federal Revenue Service of Maringá (Paraná State Highway Police)

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Supply and Rural Development of the Federal District has started the fallow period campaign for beans. This will happen from September 20th until October 20th, and aims to prevent crop pests, especially the Bean Golden Mosaic Virus, transmitted by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). “As we achieve control of the whitefly and reduce the incidence of the golden mosaic, we reduce the number of insecticide applications… and we also ensure a better quality product”, said Rafael Bueno, Secretary of Agriculture. CHS and Rumo, a logistics company, have signed an agreement to build a grain and fertilizer terminal in the port of Santos. The terminal will have a capacity of 12.5 million tonnes per year, of which 9 million tonnes will be grain and 3.5 million tonnes will be fertilizer. (CHS; Rumo Logística)

Latin America

The Institute for Agricultural Development and the National Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Agricultural Phytosanitary Products have signed an agreement to promote sustainable management of phytosanitary products. Initially, a project will be implemented in Coltauco, Chile, to apply sustainable techniques and an Integrated Pest Management program, seeking to obtain Global GAP certification. “This type of initiative demonstrates our commitment as an agricultural pesticide industry to innovation and sustainable agricultural practices, especially in peasant family farming, which has an important social impact in our country,” said Patricia Villarreal, executive director of AFIPA. In Argentina, the first registrations of active ingredients for formulated pesticides were carried out through recognition of equivalency for substances already approved in other countries. There were 12 registrations through this method and the expectation is to speed up and optimize the registration time. (Senasa)

Mexico’s Secretariat of the Countryside and the Amocali Civil Association signed an agreement to promote the recycling of pesticide packaging. The measure seeks to avoid soil and water contamination and increase infrastructure from collection to disposal of packaging. (Farming Secretariat of Mexico)
