Malacarne<\/strong> \u00e9 gerente de assuntos regulat\u00f3rios da Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Produtores de Sementes da Argentina (Asociaci\u00f3n de Semilleros Argentinos<\/a>) e membro das comiss\u00f5es de avalia\u00e7\u00e3o de OGM na Argentina.<\/p>\n

AgriBrasilis – Como a biotecnologia \u00e9 usada na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de sementes?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fabiana Malacarne –<\/strong> \u00c9 utilizada para acelerar os processos de reprodu\u00e7\u00e3o, por exemplo, com sele\u00e7\u00e3o assistida por marcadores moleculares. Essa ferramenta permite a redu\u00e7\u00e3o de tempo e economia de custos, pois apenas as plantas que possuem a caracter\u00edstica de interesse s\u00e3o levadas a campo para testes.<\/p>\n

Outra ferramenta biotecnol\u00f3gica utilizada \u00e9 a engenharia gen\u00e9tica, para introduzir caracter\u00edsticas em plantas que seriam dif\u00edceis de obter por outros m\u00e9todos de melhoramento (cruzamento e sele\u00e7\u00e3o, indu\u00e7\u00e3o de muta\u00e7\u00f5es, etc.), como resist\u00eancia a insetos. Isso \u00e9 obtido atrav\u00e9s da introdu\u00e7\u00e3o de genes da bact\u00e9ria do solo Bacillus thuringiensis<\/em> (Bt) em plantas. Esses genes produzem prote\u00ednas que s\u00e3o t\u00f3xicas para um grupo de insetos-praga (Lepidoptera), mas s\u00e3o inofensivas para humanos e animais dom\u00e9sticos, de modo que um melhor controle de pragas pode ser alcan\u00e7ado reduzindo o uso de inseticidas qu\u00edmicos.<\/p>\n

Atualmente, os milhos Bt ocupam 91% da \u00e1rea de milho plantada na Argentina. Mais recentemente, a edi\u00e7\u00e3o g\u00eanica come\u00e7ou a ser utilizada para o melhoramento de plantas. Embora existam muitos desenvolvimentos potenciais, nenhum deles \u00e9 comercial at\u00e9 o momento no pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n

Como podemos ver, a biotecnologia apresenta m\u00faltiplas ferramentas que, sozinhas ou combinadas, s\u00e3o \u00fateis para atingir o objetivo de obter novas variedades que respondam \u00e0s necessidades do produtor, da ind\u00fastria e do consumidor.<\/p>\n

AgriBrasilis – Qual \u00e9 o n\u00edvel de ado\u00e7\u00e3o de cultivares Bt na Argentina? Existem casos de desenvolvimento de resist\u00eancia?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fabiana Malacarne \u2013 <\/strong>Al\u00e9m dos cerca de 91% do milho, 20% da soja e 100% do algod\u00e3o plantados na Argentina possuem prote\u00ednas Bt.<\/p>\n

Na safra 2013\/2014 tivemos o primeiro caso de resist\u00eancia no pa\u00eds, limitado a uma \u00e1rea espec\u00edfica no norte da Prov\u00edncia de S\u00e3o Lu\u00eds. A praga da broca do caule (Diatraea saccharalis<\/em>) desenvolveu resist\u00eancia \u00e0s prote\u00ednas Cry 1F e Cry 1A.105. Devido ao plano de mitiga\u00e7\u00e3o implementado, trabalho conjunto da ind\u00fastria de sementes, produtores da \u00e1rea e \u00f3rg\u00e3os reguladores, hoje \u00e9 poss\u00edvel (ap\u00f3s 9 safras) continuar produzindo milho de forma sustent\u00e1vel e rent\u00e1vel na \u00e1rea. A resist\u00eancia est\u00e1 instalada naquela \u00e1rea, mas n\u00e3o se espalhou para o resto do pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n

A resist\u00eancia da lagarta-do-cartucho (Spodoptera frugiperda<\/em>) \u00e0 prote\u00edna Cry 1F tamb\u00e9m foi declarada em toda a zona do milho.<\/p>\n

AgriBrasilis – A recente aprova\u00e7\u00e3o do trigo transg\u00eanico \u00e9 um exemplo de biotecnologia. Que outros exemplos existem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fabiana Malacarne –<\/strong> Na Argentina, aprovamos culturas geneticamente modificadas em milho, soja e algod\u00e3o (toler\u00e2ncia a herbicidas, resist\u00eancia a insetos e ambas as caracter\u00edsticas \u201cempilhadas\u201d), trigo tolerante \u00e0 seca, batata resistente a v\u00edrus, alfafa tolerante a herbicida com menor teor de lignina e c\u00e1rtamo que produz quimosina (agricultura molecular). Fabiana Malacarne –<\/strong> O trigo transg\u00eanico passou por todas as avalia\u00e7\u00f5es de biosseguran\u00e7a exigidas pelo sistema regulat\u00f3rio (seguran\u00e7a ambiental e alimentar) e provou ser t\u00e3o seguro para cultivo e consumo quanto as variedades convencionais. Somado a isso, se der vantagens ao produtor em ambientes secos, teremos mais produ\u00e7\u00e3o de trigo por hectare em ambientes marginais ou em anos de seca. \u00c9 um bom exemplo de como o melhoramento gen\u00e9tico pode ajudar a mitigar os efeitos das mudan\u00e7as clim\u00e1ticas e ajudar a produzir mais alimentos para atender \u00e0s metas de desenvolvimento sustent\u00e1vel da FAO.<\/p>\n
