AgriBrasilis – Santa Rosa \u00e9 o \u00fanico instituto privado de melhoramento da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar na Argentina. Qual \u00e9 a hist\u00f3ria da institui\u00e7\u00e3o? Quais cultivares foram desenvolvidas ao longo de seus 71 anos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

German Serino –<\/strong> A Chacra Experimental Agr\u00edcola Santa Rosa foi fundada em agosto de 1951, quando os terrenos \u201cSanta Rosa\u201d e \u201cLa Toma\u201d foram adquiridos no departamento de Or\u00e1n, Prov\u00edncia de Salta, pelo Ingenio y Refiner\u00eda San Mart\u00edn del Tabacal <\/em>(atualmente Seaboard Energ\u00edas Renovables y Alimentos<\/em>), Ledesma Sugar Estates and Refining Company <\/em>(hoje Ledesma SAAI<\/em>), Leach’s Argentine Estates <\/em>(hoje Ingenio La Esperanza<\/em>), Ingenio R\u00edo Grande <\/em>e Ingenio San Isidro.<\/em><\/p>\n

O primeiro diretor da Santa Rosa foi o agr\u00f4nomo Roberto Fern\u00e1ndez de Ull\u00edvarri, que a dirigiu desde sua cria\u00e7\u00e3o at\u00e9 1956, e depois entre 1975 e 1985. Em 1956, Ull\u00edvarri viajou para Porto Rico, onde realizou cruzamentos que resultaram nas cultivares NA 56-79, NA 56-30, NA 56-42, NA 56-62, NA 56-83 e NA 56 – 26.<\/p>\n

A NA 56-79, originalmente conhecida como \u201clinha 17001\u201d ou \u201cLa Miluno\u201d, foi uma das variedades mais cultivadas de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar em toda a hist\u00f3ria mundial, tendo sido plantada em 55% da superf\u00edcie de Tucum\u00e1n e em mais de um milh\u00e3o de hectares no Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo, Brasil. Apesar de sua suscetibilidade ao \u201ccarb\u00f3n” (doen\u00e7a\u00a0causada pelo fungo Ustilago scitaminea<\/em>), \u00e9 uma das variedades que mais tem produzido a\u00e7\u00facar por hectare em \u00e1reas subtropicais.<\/p>\n

A cultivar NA 56-30 alcan\u00e7ou uma importante difus\u00e3o em Tucum\u00e1n. As cultivares NA 56- 42, NA 56-62 e NA 56-83, por sua vez, tiveram um bom desempenho em Salta e Jujuy. Dentre essas, a NA 56-42 foi a cultivar mais adotada na Costa Rica entre as d\u00e9cadas de 1990 e 2000, ainda sendo cultivada atualmente. A cultivar NA 56-26 foi a principal variedade na Bol\u00edvia por v\u00e1rios anos.<\/p>\n

A NA 63-90 foi uma cultivar precoce, que ocupou cerca de 25% da \u00e1rea de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar em Tucum\u00e1n. Mais tarde, a NA 85-1602 foi amplamente adotada em Jujuy e Salta e \u00e9 cultivada na Costa Rica e em uma \u00e1rea limitada do Mato Grosso, Brasil. A cultivar NA 97-3152, ocupa uma porcentagem importante de Jujuy e Salta, embora hoje em dia sua ado\u00e7\u00e3o esteja em decl\u00ednio.<\/p>\n

Atualmente, as cultivares mais relevantes incluem a NA 96-2929, que ocupa cerca de 10% da \u00e1rea canavieira de Jujuy e Salta, e a NA 90-1001, que ocupa 8,5%. A NA05-860 ocupa mais de 10% da \u00e1rea de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar e sua ado\u00e7\u00e3o est\u00e1 em expans\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

AgrBrasilis – Que pesquisas est\u00e3o sendo realizadas nas \u00e1reas de biotecnologia, melhoramento de plantas e patologia?<\/strong><\/p>\n

German Serino –<\/strong> La Chacra \u00e9 pioneira em biotecnologia na Argentina, tendo gerado a primeira cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar transg\u00eanica do pa\u00eds. O foco da pesquisa em Biotecnologia em La Chacra est\u00e1 no controle de ervas daninhas por meio da resist\u00eancia a herbicidas.<\/p>\n

O evento transg\u00eanico resistente ao glifosato QAB016 (NA 05-2019 “RR”) est\u00e1 em processo regulat\u00f3rio, concluindo atualmente as etapas experimentais de caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o do gene inserido e da express\u00e3o g\u00eanica.<\/p>\n

La Chacra desenvolveu cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar resistente ao v\u00edrus do mosaico por meio de interfer\u00eancia de RNA, obtendo eventos transg\u00eanicos que resistiram ao v\u00edrus por v\u00e1rios anos de cultivo experimental em campo. Esses eventos s\u00e3o realizados em parcelas regulamentadas apenas para fins de pesquisa, pois a comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o dessa tecnologia n\u00e3o est\u00e1 prevista no momento.<\/p>\n

Tamb\u00e9m realizamos pesquisas em edi\u00e7\u00e3o de genoma, tecnologia com grande potencial para o desenvolvimento de cultivares.<\/p>\n

AgriBrasilis – Qual \u00e9 a fonte de recursos para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa? Existe financiamento do governo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

German Serino –<\/strong> La Chacra \u00e9 uma ONG que trabalha para o setor a\u00e7ucareiro nas prov\u00edncias de Jujuy e Salta, na Argentina. Os recursos que sustentam a investiga\u00e7\u00e3o prov\u00eam de honor\u00e1rios corporativos contribu\u00eddos pelas Usinas de A\u00e7\u00facar Ledesma, Seaboard e R\u00edo Grande, e do fornecimento de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar residual das investiga\u00e7\u00f5es para moagem nos Ingenios<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Houve poucas ocasi\u00f5es no passado em que a Chacra recebeu financiamento do governo para projetos espec\u00edficos, mas este \u00e9 o caso atualmente.<\/p>\n

O custo de desenvolver uma variedade de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar \u00e9 altamente vari\u00e1vel e dif\u00edcil de estimar. Normalmente o processo de desenvolvimento de uma cultivar requer aproximadamente 15 anos de pesquisa.<\/p>\n

AgriBrasilis – Que propor\u00e7\u00e3o da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar \u00e9 usada para produzir a\u00e7\u00facar e etanol? A melhoria \u00e9 feita de forma diferente para cada finalidade?<\/strong><\/p>\n

German Serino –<\/strong> Em 2019, a Argentina produziu mais de 2.100.000 toneladas de a\u00e7\u00facar e 520.000 m3 <\/sup>de bioetanol. \u00c9 dif\u00edcil indicar quanto de cana foi destinado \u00e0 produ\u00e7\u00e3o de a\u00e7\u00facar e quanto foi dedicado para o bioetanol, pois os diferentes esquemas de produ\u00e7\u00e3o das usinas variam entre si ao produzir etanol a partir de mela\u00e7o, caldo ou atrav\u00e9s da mistura dos dois. Al\u00e9m disso, diferentes f\u00e1bricas possuem estrat\u00e9gias de diversifica\u00e7\u00e3o, principalmente atrav\u00e9s da gera\u00e7\u00e3o de eletricidade e produ\u00e7\u00e3o de papel.<\/p>\n

Como as estrat\u00e9gias de produ\u00e7\u00e3o variam em um per\u00edodo de tempo sensivelmente menor do que os tempos de desenvolvimento de uma cultivar, o Chacra busca desenvolver uma cana que atenda duplamente aos diferentes prop\u00f3sitos.<\/p>\n

AgriBrasilis – A cana melhorada difere do milho h\u00edbrido na medida em que \u00e9 poss\u00edvel que os agricultores a reproduzam em sua pr\u00f3pria fazenda. \u00c9 poss\u00edvel garantir a proced\u00eancia do material? Como proteger a propriedade intelectual dos materiais desenvolvidos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

German Serino –<\/strong> Na Argentina, as variedades de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar s\u00e3o protegidas atrav\u00e9s da concess\u00e3o de t\u00edtulo de propriedade por meio de cadastro no Registro Nacional de Propriedade Cultivar (RNPC). O registro de uma cultivar nesse sistema n\u00e3o a qualifica para comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o, para o que tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio, al\u00e9m da prote\u00e7\u00e3o no RNPC, o cadastro da variedade no Registro Nacional de Cultivares (RNC).<\/p>\n
