Farmers exchange cereal cultivation for soybeans, due to fertilizer prices. 17 million hectares of soybean will be planted in the 2022/23 season. Planted area will increase by 650,000 hectares, or 4% more than in the previous season. Total production is expected to increase 24% compared to the 2021/22 harvest of 41 million tonnes, which suffered serious problems due to the drought. (USDA)

China approves HB4 variety of drought-tolerant Argentine GMO soybean, developed by Bioceres. Resolution published in China allows the importation and commercialization of HB4 soy and its derivatives. Approval process has been in progress since 2016. (Bioceres)

Alternaria alternata fungus affects tangerine farms in the northern region. Average temperatures between 20 ºC and 28 ºC and high humidity favor appearance and propagation of alternaria, also called tangerine brown spot. (National Institute of Agricultural Technology)

 

Newcastle disease outbreak in Chulumani, South Yungas province. Affected lot consisted of 1,800 birds and underwent autopsy and laboratory tests. Half of the birds died from the disease. Vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease will be suspended in six states and in the Federal District, aiming to make the country free of the disease without use of vaccination until 2026. Measure will take place after the last vaccination stage, in November. States covered are Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Tocantins, in addition to the Federal District. Field day was held in the Metropolitan Region with raspberry and strawberry farmers to disseminate information about the pest Drosophila suzukii, known as the spotted-wing fly.
